What advance payment is normal?
In Latvian practice the advance is usually 20–30% of the contract price, with the rest paid in stages or on completion. The exact amount is freely agreed in the contract.
What is a penalty and how high can it be?
A penalty is a charge for delayed performance. For a late monetary obligation it may not exceed 10% of the principal debt (Civil Law, section 1716).
Does the contract have to be in writing?
An oral contract is valid, but a written one is strongly recommended — it is proof of the agreement and makes payments and dispute resolution easier.
